The strongly fancied favourite, Derby winner Coronation, was all the rage in the betting and connections would not hear of defeat. After the obligatory false start it was Cattonian who set the early pace. At the foot of the hill John Day took the favourite to the front and maintained a strong gallop until inside the furlong pole when Satirist challenged. A good battle ensued before Satirist prevailed by half a neck in 3 minutes 21 seconds. The day after this race there was an extremely important meeting between the Doncaster Corporation and the Jockey Club, details of which are shown below. Over Round 111%
A deputation from the Doncaster Corporation stated that the Council would recommend that in future they would provide a Cup to the value of 200 guineas and, in addition, a subscription of £500. Lord George Bentinck, on behalf of the Jockey Club, stated that they required £1000, observing that if that proposition was not acceded then they would transfer their support to those racecourses where the proprietors were not determined to give as little as possible. Further stating, 'We know we have the power to destroy and annihilate your races and we are of a mind to do so unless you are disposed to make annually so liberal a contribution as we think in justice and fairness you ought'. With this threat hanging over them the Town Council voted by 13 to 8 in favour of subscribing £1000.
I am very grateful to Andy Thrower for the image of the 1841 St Leger racecard shown below, part of his magnificent collection.
